Medication Precaution

Main guideline is to quit using any medication that is not used for a life support. Whichever pharmaceutical products that function to suppress the symptoms are better to quit within a distance of minimum 6 days and up to three weeks (depending the case) prior and after taking Aya. Most of the medications may be an unnecessary admixture into your Aya experience. Keep in mind, whatever the causes for your ailments, an Aya experience has a potential to cleanse the body and to provide an insight for a solution. Some of the medications can also be dangerous in combination with Aya, for example all antidepressants; SSRI’s and mood stabilizers are better to quit gradually preferably within 2 to 3 weeks before taking Aya, so that no traces of medication are present in the body at a time of ceremony. Aya is classified as MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor), meaning that it has specific interaction with some types of medication.

Drugs To Be Avoided With Aya

The following list of drugs and pharmaceutical remedies are potentially dangerous with Aya, if you’re using any of this and are not able to quit 2 to 3 weeks prior to the retreat under the supervision of your doctor, you should not participate:

  • MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors)
  • SSRI’s (any selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
  • Antihypertensives (high blood pressure medicine)
  • Appetite suppressants (diet pills)
  • Medicine for asthma, bronchitis, or other breathing problems; antihistamines, medicines for colds, sinus problems, hay fever, or allergies (Actifed DM, Benadryl, Benylin, Chlor-Trimeton, Compoz. These include Bromarest-DM or -DX, Dimetane-DX cough syrup, Dristan Cold & Flu, Phenergan with Dextromethorphan, Robitussin-DM, Vicks formula 44-D several Tylenol cold, cough, and flu preparations, and many others — any drug with DM or Tuss in its name.)
  • CNS (central nervous system) depressants
  • any drug with DM or Tuss in its name
  • Antipsychotics
  • Barbiturates
  • Alcohol
  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamines (meth-, dex-, amphetamine)
  • MDMA (Ecstasy)
  • MDA

  • PMA
  • Dextromethorphan (DXM)
Family History of Severe Mental Illness

The right and appropriate use of Aya facilitated by the Shawadawa tribe has been specifically utilized with significant results for the support and improvement of psychological trauma and its resultant symptomatology. At the same time, potential guests with a close / strong family history of bipolar mood disorder, schizophrenia, and depersonalization should realize they are at an increased risk for the expression of these symptoms, and it is conceivable (although highly unlikely) that Aya can unmask such symptoms in predisposed individuals. Consequently, people who meet this criteria should undertake this type of work with due consideration and at their own risk.
